To our valued customers:
I am writing to you in regards to an announcement made by one of our long term software vendors, cPanel. The other day cPanel, the vendor that provides our control panel software for our shared hosing accounts, announced that they would be making changes to the way they license their software to us. We are disappointed in these changes because they force our hand in making one of many difficult decisions that affects us and our customers in a negative way. Instead of just licensing the software per server, they would begin to license us per hosting account on each server. This would drastically increase our operating costs. Before I get into details, I just want to make it absolutely clear that as of today, your hosting account is not changing. Any changes we decide to make will be communicated to you well in advance.
NodeSpace is a proud small business. We're not owned by anyone other than our employees. This allows us to keep prices low, make decisions fast, and provide quality service. We may not be able to offer some of the deals our competitors offer, but we will always have the back of our customers.
One of the difficult decisions we will have to make is adjusting our pricing. We are a budget hosting provider and provide services to customers who would like premium hosting without the premium price. One of the features we offer customers is a "price lock." This means that you pay the same price as the day you signed up for hosting, even if we change the price of the package an hour after you sign up. We'd have to break this promise in order to help us cover the costs. As we'd be billed per account per server, this means that customers on less populated servers would have to pay more. Or, if we wanted to only increase the price minimally, we'd have to cram more websites onto single servers to bring down the cost per account - something we do not want to do as this can cause your website to run slow.
Another option we have is to find a replacement control panel. This would mean migrating accounts to a new server with a different control panel installed. This means that the features you've known to love and enjoy would change, or would not be available.
The third option we have is completely eliminating shared hosting all together. If we elected this option, customers would have to move to a VPS or dedicated server if they wished to remain with us. This can increase costs for our customers, especially if they require a control panel.
The fourth option is one that I absolutely hope we do not have to elect and that is completely shutting down our operations. NodeSpace has been in business for 10 years and I have been running web hosting for the last 13 years. It's an industry I absolutely love and I am passionate about and would hate to exit.
Again, as of today, nothing is currently changing. Whichever option we elect, we will provide customers with at least 30 days notice before anything happens. I sincerely hope cPanel listens to their customers (web hosting providers) and reverses this decision. While the goal of any business is to make money to enable growth and hire the best talent, decisions like this can cause a ripple throughout the industry.
